At Woodlands Academy the skills of reading will be taught in accordance with the National Curriculum using both guided and independent sessions.
All children in school will have a reading book, appropriate to their level and competency, which is to be sent home regularly. Class teachers will keep reading records for each child in their class. Children are expected to read at home at least three times a week. We also encourage them to read widely for pleasure.
Phonics is taught throughout KS1, following the Letters and Sounds programme.
We have a core reading scheme enhanced by a wide range of additional readers, both fiction and non-fiction. Children will also access reading through electronic devises and other media. reading is seen as an integral part of the wider curriculum.

We encourage children to read through regular Reading Challenges and by providing inviting reading areas within the classroom setting.
